‘A Perfect Pairing’ wasn't just the title of the film, it described the collaboration between the entire creative team! As lead makeup and hair designer, let me tell you, bringing this rom-com to life for Netflix was a delightful change.
Working with director Stuart MacDonald was a dream. He had a clear vision for the film's aesthetic, a natural beauty that reflected the Australian outback setting. This was a different from the usual rom-com world of perfectly coiffed hair and flawless makeup. It was an exciting to bring a more realistic appeal.
Our leading lady, Victoria Justice, plays a glamorous American thrust into the rugged Australian landscape. The key to her transformation was maintaining a sense of her character's city polish while subtly adapting it to the outback. We kept her makeup fresh and natural, focusing on light foundation and enhancing her features without overpowering them.
For Adam Demos, who plays the heartthrob Australian vintner, the focus was on authenticity. Forget the perfectly sculpted "outback chic" you might expect. We embraced the heat and dirt of the environment, letting Adam's natural good looks shine through with a touch of believable sweat and minimal makeup
There were moments, of course, where navigating network approvals felt like a hurdle. With a team across the ocean, there was a constant flow of notes. But the beauty of this project was the open communication. My push for a more realistic aesthetic resonated with the producers. They understood the power of visuals in crafting a believable world.
The best part? Seeing it all come together. Witnessing Victoria's really embody her less than perfect character. Observing Adam feel confident and comfortable in his ‘unpolished’ look. It wasn't just about makeup and hair design; it was about using it to unlock the characters and support the director's vision. The makeup and hair design I created was just one piece of the puzzle, but it played a vital role in bringing this delightful rom-com to life.
