DESIGN APPLICATION
Working with Daina Reed on Run Rabbit Run was an enlightening experience. I've worked with her before, and she's quite dynamic. She’s generally quiet but then surprises you with incredible insights. Daina’s deep understanding and vision for the film always left us in awe.
Daina's approach is very collaborative, which made the process of transforming actors into their characters much more engaging. We have a great working language, allowing us to sit down and discuss the characters in depth. This was especially important for Sarah Snook's character. Sarah is very open and willing to discuss any aspect of the makeup and SPFX process, which made our collaboration extremely effective.
I began with a deep dive into the character's background and emotional state. For Sarah’s character, this meant understanding her journey from a struggling single mother to someone facing psychological challenges.
Daina and I had several meetings to ensure we were on the same page regarding the look and feel of each character. We discussed how the makeup would evolve with the story, reflecting the character's psychological state.
Throughout the film, we wanted the audience to see the unraveling before Sarah's character does. Small details, like the subtle darkening of her under-eye circles and the gradual increase of fine lines, helped portray this slow descent. By the end of the film, the transformation was evident – Sarah’s character shifted from being perceived as a victim to revealing her true predatory nature. This was a transition that we meticulously planned and executed through makeup and special effects.
Overall, the process of working with Daina, Sarah, and the producers Sarah Shaw, Anna McLeish, Nathaniel Bolotin was incredibly fulfilling. The transformations we achieved were a testament to the power of collaboration and creative synergy. I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished on Run Rabbit Run and look forward to pushing the boundaries of makeup and SPFX in future projects.
TRANFORMING
SARAH SNOOK
Sarah Snook is a joy to work with and its the third time working with her. She starts off the film dealing with the aftermath of a failed marriage and the challenges of raising a child. To reflect this, we decided on a look that conveys her initial fragility and exhaustion. Her makeup was minimalistic, with subtle touches to highlight the stress and strain of her circumstances.
As the story progresses, her character begins to unravel. This is where the makeup and special effects became crucial in visually representing her psychological decline. For instance, in scenes where she burns her hand with a lighter, we used special effects makeup to create realistic burn marks, emphasising her deteriorating mental state.
